Itinerary

Day 1Arrival in Moshi, Kilimanjaro

Arrive at Kilimanjaro International Airport and transfer to Moshi. Meet your guides for a briefing and gear check. Overnight in a hotel in Moshi.

Day 2Moshi to Machame Camp

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate. Begin the trek through the lush rainforest to Machame Camp.

Elevation: 1,640m to 2,850m
Distance: 11 km
Hiking Time: 5-7 hours

Day 3Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Continue trekking through the forest, then climb a steep ridge into the moorland zone to Shira Camp.

Elevation: 2,850m to 3,750m
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4-6 hours

Day 4Shira Camp to Barranco Camp

Trek to Lava Tower, then descend to Barranco Camp through the beautiful but challenging Barranco Valley.

Elevation: 3,750m to 3,900m
Distance: 10 km
Hiking Time: 6-8 hours

Day 5Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Navigate the Barranco Wall and trek through the Karanga Valley to Karanga Camp.

Elevation: 3,900m to 3,995m
Distance: 5 km
Hiking Time: 4-5 hours

Day 6Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Ascend to Barafu Camp, where you’ll prepare for the summit attempt.

Elevation: 3,995m to 4,640m
Distance: 4 km

Day 7Barafu Camp to Summit, descend to Mweka Camp

Begin the summit trek at midnight, reach Uhuru Peak, then descend to Mweka Camp.

Elevation: 4,640m to 5,895m (Summit), then down to 3,080m
Distance: 5 km ascent, 12 km descent
Hiking Time: 7-8 hours ascent, 6-8 hours descent

Day 8Mweka Camp to Moshi, Departure

Finish the descent to Mweka Gate and receive your summit certificates. Transfer back to Moshi for departure.
